Riding on a donkey — a crazy journey
A New Way of Reading the Christmas Story — Part 4
I’m really glad I didn’t have to undertake a 90 mile journey on the back of a donkey when I was nine months pregnant. What an extraordinary feat!
I doubt Mary was too delighted about that journey either. But it just had to be done. It was the next thing that came her way, so she did it. (And Joseph too, of course. But he wasn’t pregnant.)
There are all sorts of things that crop up along our journeys that we wouldn’t have chosen ourselves. We can struggle and argue and fight against them, or take the journey and see where it leads us.
How could they know that Mary would end up giving birth in a stable? I bet things were looking pretty bleak at that point.
But then who knew there would be angels, shepherds, wise men, gold, frankincense and myrrh all showing up in that same, simple stable just hours later?
And we don’t know either.
